Geneva Fire Investigation Continues

An investigation continues into the cause of a fire that destroyed a Wiregrass landmark Monday night.

A motorist reported flames coming from the old JP Black House across from the Geneva County Courthouse just after 6:30 pm.

The home was built in 1908 by a well-known judge and community leader in the early 20th century.

It had fallen in disrepair over recent decades, but last year, Geneva Attorney David Harrison purchased the home and was in the process of renovating it for an office and museum.

It is odd that we now have a fine countywide water system in place, but we can't get enough water in the historic district of town to put out a house fire. These same "80 year old water mains" have cost this town other buildings as well. Fifteen years ago, firefighters could not get enough water to fight a fire at the service station just up the street (then Elmore's Citgo) & it too was a total loss. Thirty years ago, "The Mr. Shop", on the corner across from City Hall was also lost due to no water pressure. This problem has NOT just developed, it has been around a long while. Failures on the part of the current & past City Administration, the water department, and Fire Department LEADERS have cost us another landmark in town. Many other historic homes in this threatened area that could be next. A sincere "fine job" and heartfelt thanks to the actual firefighters who were there... they worked very hard. Sadly, they were defeated in their efforts before they ever left the station.
