With revised vote totals from Baldwin County giving Republican Bob Riley victory over Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman, the battle for Alabama's top office now turns to the certification process.
Siegelman maintains that county election canvassing boards shouldn't rush to certify the county results like Baldwin County did Wednesday.
The governor also said state law requires county canvassing boards to certify their results Friday and then report them to the secretary of state in Montgomery.
Secretary of State Jim Bennett and Riley's campaign said that Friday is a deadline. But both said if counties have a pattern and practice of certifying the official results earlier -- it is legal under state law.
The canvassing board in the Republican-dominated Baldwin County certified results showing the correct number for Siegelman was 12,736, not the 19,070 initially reported by county officials on election night.
