Dan Rather is out of the CBS anchor chair and heading to full-time reporting for the network's two "60 Minutes" programs.
Rather, who is 73, signed off from the CBS Evening News Wednesday night. Veteran newsman Bob Schieffer takes over until a permanent team is in place.
The exit comes at a low point in Rather's career. He took much of the public blame for a discredited "60 Minutes" story last fall about President Bush's military service.
Rather ended his program last night by saying, "And, to each of you, Courage," a word he had briefly used as a sign-off in 1986 before dropping it.
