Campaigning Elected Officials

WTVY News 4 talked to people in the Wiregrass about all the mudslinging between Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman and Congressman Bob Riley.

There's a new controversy brewing about Riley and Siegelman's political attendance records.

The Democratic governor has criticized Riley for having one of the worst attendance records in Congress and missing votes while campaigning in Alabama. Riley attributes his missed votes to family illnesses and deaths.

Riley promised to give up a portion of his pay during a news conference in Hoover on Oct. 1. A spokesman said that Riley hasn't decided how much of his $150,000 annual salary he'll return.

To date, neither Siegelman nor Riley has given up any of his government salary to compensate for time spent campaigning.
