Houston County residents will soon be paying more to get rid of their garbage.
Commissioners decided to increase the garbage pick-up fee to $12.
Currently the garbage pickup fee stands at $9.60 and there has not been an increase in the fee since 1990.
County engineers say the sanitation department is losing money because fuel prices have drastically gone up.
They also had to increase their workers pay because there was such a high turn-over rate.
The sanitation department has only purchased one new truck in the past six years, meaning the cost of repairs to old trucks is also high
The increase will go into effect May 1. However, if residents have already paid their garbage bill for the year, they will not be affected.
Commissioners are also thinking about increasing the late fees from $3 to $5.
