Ocean Opry Closing

A landmark that once helped the Florida Panhandle earn its "Redneck Riviera" nickname is giving way to the region's rebirth as a more upscale and cosmopolitan tourist destination.

An Atlanta-based developer bought Ocean Opry last week but it will remain open through the end of the Summer tourist season. Its doors will then close for good after 27 years.

The 10-acre site will become part of a planned 40-acre commercial development.

The Miracle Strip Amusement Park also closed to make way for high-priced, high-rise
condominiums and Club La Vela will be closing later his year.

Tourism officials now want people to call the area "Florida’s Great Northwest."
