A coroner says a four-year-old girl endured sadistic, long-term torture before her death two weeks ago.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Jay Glass concluded the girl's murder was quote "beyond child abuse." He described the abuse of Makayia Davis as among the worst he has seen.
Glass declined to discuss specifics about the girl's injuries for fear of jeopardizing the capital murder case against Makayia's mother, 27-year-old Monica Mays.
He said it took medical examiners more than two hours to document the girl's abuse wounds, which included blunt-force injuries as well as thermal injuries. Glass said the young victim appeared to have been burned over her body, possibly with a curling iron.
He also said some of the child's injuries were infected because they had gone so long without being treated.
The state Department of Human Resources has said it had been involved with Makayia's family since her birth, but has not released additional information.
Mays' court-appointed attorney said her client denies killing anyone and is devastated by Makayia's death.
