One quarter of Americans are currently caring for an elderly friend or relative; it’s a task that can be a lot of work for one person to handle.

There is always a need for in home care for the elderly, but as the baby boomers are running into their later years, the elderly population is increasing.

Home Instead Senior Care offers assistance to seniors in the comfort of their own home.

Owner Angie Berry says, "We're there to help seniors get through aging delicately, but independently and gracefully, so that they don't have to allow someone else; cause we're not there to assist them. We're not there to take charge, they're the boss, you know, we're there to make their lives easier."

The company is a worldwide franchise, but is new to Dothan as of October.

They offer not only help, but also companionship to senior citizens.

Medical services are not offered, but there are outlets in Dothan that can provide medical assistance.

Director of Home Health Services Lorenzo Suter said, "Currently, we offer registered nursing physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and home health aid. Most of our patients are room care patients, diabetic patients, patients with specifically Alzheimer’s and dementia."

Home Health Services works is in partnership with Flowers Hospital.

They have also seen an increase in patients the last several months.

For family members, caring for their loved ones can be a lot of work, and they might need assistance themselves.

"You may need a weekend away and you don't want to leave mom, but you can't take mom,” Berry adds. “So you call us, and we'll be your eyes and ears for your mom while you're gone and when you come back, we're done."

Some typical tasks they help with include meal planning, household chores, and transportation.

Because of these resources, today's senior citizens are not forced to enter a nursing home and can enjoy life in their own homes.

Importantly, Home Instead thoroughly trains all of their employees and tests them for drug use.

They also use a personality profile match to better pair caregivers and clients.
