Next Monday, people across the country will be ringing in the New Year.
To help keep drunk drivers off the road, AAA of Alabama is doing something big.
The night of New Year’s Eve, AAA is offering free towing for up to 10 miles, even to those who aren't a member.
"There's always that consumption problem; people consume alcohol in excess on New Year’s Day and possibly the week before, so we need to look out for these people," said Nicholas Monday.
With the help of state wrecker services, AAA Alabama is offering free towing the night of New Year’s. The Tow-For-Life Program will be in its 21st consecutive year.
Mark Smith said, "I think the public is getting smarter about it and they're getting somebody to designate a driver and take them home now. But we still have people that participate in the program and were more than happy to help them with it."
Dothan's own Eagle Towing is the AAA service provider.
They have been taking part in Tow-For-Life Program for 15 years.
Smith added, "Several years ago, maybe five or six years ago, we had 20 in one night; that’s the most we've ever had."
There will be three drivers on duty ready to go.
AAA is proud to give the service to the public, and released the following statement:
"New Year's Eve is the most dangerous night of the year to be on the roads, and we want to help eliminate drinking and driving. This free towing service is available to anyone and will make our highways safer by helping to keep intoxicated party goers from getting behind the wheel."
Even though Tow-For-Life is available, the public should still be careful and use caution after popping that champagne at midnight.
You can call 1-800-222-4357; this is the number AAA members and non-members can use in case they need to be towed on New Year’s Eve.
