Alabama health officials are promoting a telephone-based tobacco cessation program for the New Year.

It that will provide counseling and a four-week supply of nicotine patches for smokers around the state.

Health officials say calls placed after these hours or on weekends or holidays are returned the next business day and translator services are available for non-English speakers.

The Alabama Tobacco Quit Line's telephone number is 1-800-784-8669 or 1-800-QUIT NOW with counselors available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

You will have to disclose any existing medical problems, such as a heart condition, that preclude using a nicotine patch.

The program has a 20 percent quit rate after 30 days.
