Walton County will soon receive a quarter-million dollars in communication upgrades.
The money is earmarked for emergency responder agencies countywide.
Defuniak Springs Police City Marshal Michael Adkinson says the dollars are sorely needed.
Since his department took over its own dispatch services earlier this year, they've been relying on outdated, borrowed equipment.
Adkinson says they'll change with the grant and will be especially beneficial to E-911 services. "Reliability is a big factor,” he says. “We can't afford to go without a back-up when lives can be at stake. We must continue and remain vigilant to the public's need."
The funds became available through a grant program for Florida’s rural counties.
