Sniper Shootings

Prosecutors are deciding whether to charge a man who claimed he saw the sniper open fire with a rifle Monday night and escape in a cream-colored van.

His story later unraveled and Montgomery County, Maryland police chief Charles Moose said the man intentionally misled them.

Moose blames reporters for spreading witness reports about the van, the weapon and the suspect. As he sees it, "When we have people from the media interviewing witnesses and publishing reports, we get confusion."

Police had asked the public to report sightings of cream-colored vans with ladder racks on the roof.

They haven't ruled out the possibility there could be multiple suspects in the sniper attacks. Nine people have been killed and two wounded since Oct. 2.
