Dothan Leash Law Controversy

The City of Dothan is working to make leash laws tougher to help protect residents.

At the City Commission meeting the issue became heated as commissioners took different stances on the issue.

Some say the new ordinance may infringe upon the rights of residents while others say it is necessary to keep residents safe.

Because this issue affects so many residents the city would like to hold a public forum to hear from residents.

A date has not yet been set for that meeting.

i think that the city government needs to be concerned about residents owning dogs that can be dangerous to even family members. oftentimes, it's the family pets that attacks and sometimes kill family members. it is not the stray dogs that is doing the most harm. pit bulls ,dobermans, st. bernards are not good pets to have with small children.i think that some people have such love for animals that it overrides their concern for the safety of humans. i think that someone should look into the possibility of banning the ownership of dogs that could become vicious

I am glad the city of Dothan has a leash law. I think it should be enforced more. I live in a good neighborhood & the law is ignored. Many residents allow their dogs to roam free. I have had problems with dogs barking at me in my own yard and chasing me fom my mailbox while they stand barking in the street, using the bathroom in my yard, on my plants, my front porch, my driveway, my car, and in front of my mailbox. My husband was in our driveway doing maintenance on our car and two big dogs that were being walked without a leash and allowed to run jumped my husband. The owner had to run over and remove them before anyone got hurt. I have also made calls to animal control who did not show up half the time an when they did acted like it was no big deal and no report was made. I think this is lazy procedures and should be corrected. Everyone has the right to be safe and enjoy their property. It should not take an attack for the city of Dothan to see the leash law needs to be to tougher.

dothan likes to pay for surveys and suggestions to make dhn. a better place to live. why wasn't this done with this issue? this ordinance is wrong as it is. it will just make west and powell happy because all these dogs and cats will be rounded up and destroyed. isn't life lovely in dothan?

I live in a town with a Leash Ordnance but then any Law is only as good the government that is responsible for enforcement of that Law. As far as I can see the Leash Law in my town goes unenforced as dogs run loose and unchecked.
