PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - The Interstate-10 bridge over Escambia
Bay is now open -- more than three years after being destroyed by
Florida Governor Charlie Crist celebrated the bridge's reopening yesterday, with passing truck drivers sounding their horns.
Crist said the bridge now reconnects northwestern Florida with the rest of the state and restores an evacuation route for residents in the Panhandle.
To ensure the bridge's safety in future hurricanes, engineers rebuilt its span 25 feet over the bay -- more than twice its previous height.
