Bob Schieffer is likely to face the nation weeknights in addition to Sunday mornings for CBS News.
A network executive confirms Schieffer will probably replace Dan Rather on an interim basis next month as "CBS Evening News" anchor.
Schieffer has been the face of Sunday's "Face the Nation" since 1991 and was the long-time anchor of the Saturday night news. He's been the network's Washington bureau chief for 23 years.
CBS chief Les Moonves said last month he'll probably install a multi-anchor format to boost the network out of the evening news cellar. But that format is unlikely to be ready by the time Rather leaves on March 9, 24 years to the day from when he took over from Walter Cronkite.
