An on-air joke about Kentucky's anti-smoking laws has left radio listeners fuming.

County offices were flooded with angry calls after a false report was broadcast about a new law banning people from smoking in their cars, in the heart of Kentucky tobacco country.

Local government officials say the deluge disrupted government operations. The police department alone received 375 calls.

The station manager says the report was intended to be a joke. The owner of the Kentucky station plans to make a public apology.

Meanwhile, the city of Lexington has dropped plans to file a complaint with federal regulators.
