Coffee County Child Support Roundup

Law enforcement began a round-up of suspects at daybreak across Coffee County.

Tony Curtis Burks would be one of 38 suspects' on Coffee County's deadbeat daddy most wanted list.

Authorities say the Elba resident has two warrants, and is way behind on back child support.

Pike/Coffee County District Attorney Personnel, along with sheriff's department deputies would go door-to-door hunting the violators.

Sheriff David Sutton said, "We will go door-to-door. We are looking for 35 to 37 of these dead beat dads. However, you say it, we want to arrest them."

District Attorney Investigator Patrick Norris helped to arrest those on the list. He said to one man, "The reason you are being arrested Tony is because of outstanding child support, do you understand that. You are responsible for paying the child support."

According to Pike/Coffee District Attorney Personnel, it's important to arrest the parents who are outstanding on child support, and warrants.

Assistant District Attorney Tom Anderson added, "It's not just a problem in Coffee County, but circuit wide, statewide, and really across the nation. And we're fixing to do it."

Authorities say they planned the round-up to try and get the negligent parents to meet their child support needs before Christmas.

This is one of several planned round-ups' of deadbeat parents planned across Coffee County.

Violators are urged to contact the District Attorney's Office and work out a payment plan.

Not everyone gets arrested. My ex husband owes over $20,000.00 and makes payments when he feels like it. So I know he was not arrested.

i am glad that some deadbeat parents got caught. but i sure wish my 3 boys father was one of them. i think all deadbeat parents (men & women) should not be allowed to get away with it for as long as they do. my exhusband has avoided getting caught for years. we have even been to court for other reasons yet he always walks away without any kind of punishment. i hear on the news how alabama aint going to tollerate not paying child support and well you cant prove it by me. all i know is my boys sure could use the $14,000 or so owed to them. ecspecially right now with christmas right around the corner and me having to struggle to give them a good christmas.

Its totally wrong to use the term "Deadbeat Daddy" when there are women who are not paying child support as ordered. How many women were rounded up? Probably not many since statistics prove that a mind boggling 87% of the time women are awarded primary custody in the state of Alabama, regardless of their parenting skills. The family court system is completely skewed in favor of women and it is absolutely unfair and biased towards women and against men. The more correct term would be "Dead Broke Dads" as men are routinely ordered to pay more than they make. Has anyone noticed the alarming number or murder/suicides in the Wiregrass area in the last 7-8 years? It most often involves couples going through divorce and custody wars which are fueled by greedy lawyers and biased judges. Men have little to live for when their children are taken away, visitation isn't enforced yet they are jailed as "Deadbeat Dads" if they miss even ONE child support payment. If you marry in Alabama your nuts!
