Officials say 101 Alabama foster children received more than 350-thousand dollars toward college during the past school year.

The federally funded grants are part of the Chafee Foster Care Independence Program, which recently wrapped up its first year of awarding grants.

The program gives up to five thousand dollars a year for former foster children in college to use for tuition, books and living expenses.
