Federal Funding

Alabama is receiving more than $5.3 million in federal funds to help emergency officials in the event of a terrorist attack involving nuclear, biological or chemical weapons.

The Department of Justice made the announcement Monday.

The funds will be used to purchase equipment and train police, firefighters, emergency management workers and others who are the first to respond if such an attack were to occur.

To qualify for the funds, which were awarded to all 50 states, officials first had to conduct assessments of the risk of such an attack and their ability to respond to them.
