Hyundai Construction Block

An environmental barrier may block construction of a Hyundai Plant near Montgomery.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is trying to stop Hyundai's application for air permits from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

The department said the state isn't enforcing stringent EPA standards for the project.

Michigan officials claim those standards blocked their attempt to recruit Hyundai. They said the challenge in Alabama was filed because the state's Detroit-based auto industry believes it has been held to a higher standard than other states.

The Michigan Agency is asking that the formal comment period be extended two weeks to allow Michigan time to challenge specific points in Hyundai's application.

Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman said there's "not a chance in the world" that Michigan will be successful in blocking the Montgomery site, saying Michigan is "beginning to feel the pinch from Alabama's success in the automotive industry."
