The Tennessee National Guardsman who asked Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld about the shortage of armored vehicles in Iraq had consulted beforehand with a home state reporter.
Chattanooga Times Free Press reporter Edward Lee Pitts, embedded with the unit, says he worked with two guardsmen after being told only soldiers could ask questions. Pitts said a sergeant agreed to pick those men to ask questions.
One question included the statement that soldiers had to scrounge for scrap armor for their vehicles, which prompted cheers from the other soldiers at the base in Kuwait.
The paper's executive editor and publisher, Tom Griscom, says members of the unit and their families wanted the question asked.
Griscom agreed with one ethics specialist that readers should've been told the background of the question.
