Marine Charged With Disertion

The Marine Corps has charged a corporal who disappeared from a U.S. military camp in Iraq earlier this year with desertion.

Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun an Arabic interpreter at a camp near Fallujah. He was feared kidnapped after he disappeared in June and later turned up in his native Lebanon.

Marine officials at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, announced the charges today after a five-month investigation.

Hassoun lives in West Jordan, Utah.

Other charges against him include theft of a military firearm and theft of a government vehicle.

No date has been set for a hearing that would be one of the first steps toward a possible court martial.
