State Senator Harri Anne Smith says she is running for the Republican nomination for the Congressional seat in Alabama's 2nd District.
The seat is being vacated by retiring U.S. Representative Terry Everett, a Republican from Rehobeth.
Smith, who is from Slocomb, held a news conference to announce she is running for the seat that has been held by a Republican since 1964.
She says she is running because she believes she has the experience needed to help the people of the 2nd District, which stretches across central and southeast Alabama from Prattville to Dothan.
The 45-year-old Smith is serving her third term in the state Senate. She is former mayor of Slocomb.
