A new state report on the leading causes of death for Alabama residents has both good and bad news.

According to figures collected by the state Department of Public Health and Auburn-Montgomery statisticians, Alabama's life expectancy is eight years higher than it was in the 1950s.

However, more teens are dying in auto accidents and crimes each year in other areas, men have higher death rates than women and minorities have higher death rates than whites in almost all age groups.

The report also shows that a growing cause of death for black youths is homicide, while for white youths it is auto accidents.
