Ala., Miss. and Tenn. Plan Holiday Speeding Blitz

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Law officers in Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi will be out in unusually large numbers during Thanksgiving week under a tri-state "Take Back Our Highways" campaign to reduce traffic deaths and injuries during the busy holiday period.

The effort will be formally announced Thursday in Montgomery at a news conference. Governor Bob Riley will be joined by highway patrol chiefs from the three states as well as other law enforcement officials from county and cities.

A news release said all available law enforcement officers from participating agencies will be on patrol duty from November 19th to the 25th.

During the five-day blitz in mid-August, Alabama state troopers gave out more than 26,000 traffic tickets, including nearly 12,000 for speeding.
