Red Tide Bloom Gone for Now in Panhandle Beaches

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A red tide bloom is gone , for now, in northern Florida.

But northern winds pushed it into the Gulf of Mexico during recent heavy storms.

Same goes for Escambia County, where authorities say no one has complained of difficulty breathing.

Red tide is formed when a microscopic algae (called Karenia brevis) reproduces at an explosive rate. The algae produces a neurotoxin that can paralyze fish and make breathing difficult for humans that inhale it.
