BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Another major drug bust on a Birmingham area interstate landed a Mexican national in jail.
Jefferson County sheriff's officials said deputies assigned to the Highway Safety Unit seized 12 kilograms of cocaine and 1 kilogram of crystal methamphatamine during a traffic stop Thursday on Interstate 20
near Interstate 459.
Sheriff Mike Hale said in a statement today the illegal drugs, valued at just under $1 million, were found hidden in a Ford Mustang that was stopped for a traffic violation.
Arrested was 51-year-old Teresa Medina Pallares of Paraeuara, Mexico. She was charged with trafficking in cocaine and trafficking in methamphetamine. Pallares was placed in the Jefferson County Jail under a $3 million bond.
Authorities suspect the drugs were destined for the Southeast for processing.
