Troopers: At Least Eight Die in Weekend Traffic Accidents

UNDATED, Ala. (AP) - State troopers are reporting at least eight people died in weekend traffic accidents on Alabama's rural highways.

The fatalities include a pedestrian who was killed Sunday night on a Russell County highway. Troopers said 55-year-old Stephen Keith Taylor of Pittsview was hit by a car on U.S. 431 just before 9 p.m. The accident happened about 15 miles south of Phenix City.

A two-car accident Sunday evening in northern Lee County killed a man and a woman and sent a third person to the hospital with serious injuries. Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said the head-on collision occurred around 6 p.m. on U.S. 29 near Bean's Mill Creek. The victims' names were withheld until next-of-kin are notified.

State troopers said other fatalities were reported in Colbert, Cullman (2), Lawrence and Monroe counties.
