About 60 registered sex offenders reside in Dothan with Halloween rapidly approaching; the police department is getting the word out to parents about safe places to trick-or-treat.
The Dothan Police department is making the names of all local sex offenders available for parents to see.
Dothan Police Department Chief Powell says, "It's a way we want to reach out to the community and let them know that we are very concerned about the children. We want to make sure they have a safe time and enjoy themselves. And also to keep the individuals who have been convicted of these crimes and put them on notice that we are watching them."
Parents can stop by the Dothan Police Department anytime starting Wednesday to see the list of local register sex offenders so that their kids can be safe while they are trick-or treating."
State law requires that anyone convicted of a sex crime register with local law enforcement and make contact twice a year.
The Dothan Police department took that one step further.
"We go out and check these offenders one a month, each offender is assigned to an officer who checks to make sure all the information is correct and brings it back to update the database," says Chief Powel.
There are other tricks to ensure child's safety during Halloween.
Chief Powell adds,”Make sure you know where your children are going to be, ideally have an adult with them. Light clothing when they go out. Make sure kids know not to go in anybody’s home. If you go up to a house stay on the porch make sure you are with a group and collect your candy."
Chief Powell says it’s still as important as ever to watch out for traffic while out on Halloween. Also parents check their children's candy after it is brought home.
