Cancer Grant Given to UAB

The University of Alabama in Birmingham is getting a $13 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to help turn UAB's medical center into one of the nation's top brain cancer research and treatment sites.

UAB beat out Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, the University of California at Los Angeles and five other applicants for one of two Specialized Programs of Research Excellence grants for brain cancer research.

The Alabama Legislature gave UAB $180,000 to work on the 800-page grant proposal.
