State Capitol Memorial

About 500 people, many wearing red, white and blue, gathered on the lawn of the state Capitol this morning to remember the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

There was a moment of silence and a cannon salute in memory of at least 12 people with Alabama ties who died on Sept. 11 or in the war against terrorism.

Governor Siegelman told the crowd that the Sept. 11 attacks were "an unspeakable tragedy." But the governor said the American people have emerged from the attacks and proven to be stronger than ever.

Prattville firefighter Kenny Rhodes gave the invocation. He said he wanted to participate to pay tribute to the New York firefighters who died in an attempt to rescue victims at the World Trade Center.
