Dothan's personnel board approved Police Chief John Powell's request for five new police officer positions.
According to Chief Powell, the need for new officers comes from the continuing growth of the city and the number of calls the police receive.
"We are servicing about 87 square miles...so that puts a demand on our resources that we have and additional staff will help keep response times where they are, and also ensure we keep our service to the community," said Chief Powell.
Chief Powell says the department receives more than 160-thousand calls a year.
