Women Investing in a New Downtown

A new group is forming in Dothan with the hopes of bringing about positive changes to the downtown area.

The winds of change are blowing in Dothan and they're stirring up enthusiasm about the revitalization of the downtown area.

A group of local women known as WIND, or Women Investing in a New Downtown, have formed to work on projects that will help improve the rundown areas.

“Young professionals moving into Dothan are worried there's nothing to do downtown, no entertainment so that's one of the things we want to support,” says project Vice President Tomya Moore.

Each year, each member donates one hundred dollars toward the non profit group in turn for one vote toward the project.

Group leaders would like to see representation from women living in each of the city’s districts.

Project Chair Letitia Jackson says, “Our goal is to enhance, collaborate and to collaborate with the groups that have already done a lot of work to revitalize our downtown are already.”

The group's 2008 project is focusing on safety and security and they are still taking ideas for a specific item to spend the money on.

The goal is to pick a project that will help attract people to the downtown area to eat, work and play.

“There is a perception that downtown is unsafe and we felt that as a good first project focusing on that and enhancing the safety, lighting, potentially camera,” said Moore.

Even though the group is comprised of all women, they encourage donations from anyone who would like to see Dothan return to a vital social magnet.

If you would like to attend one of wind's meetings, the next one is Monday, October 22nd at 5:30 at the Wiregrass Museum of Art.
