Work has begun to replace 1,048 bridges in Alabama that are dilapidated or unable to handle the weight of modern trucks and buses.
The bridges are being replaced as part of the $250 million bond issue known as Amendment One.
Department of Transportation assistant director Don Vaughn said projects to replace half of the bridges will be underway by November of 2003.
State officials hope to have all the targeted bridges replaced by 2005.
