Miller County Elects New Sheriff Tonight

Tonight Miller County will elect a new Sheriff.

This is following the sudden death of long-time Sheriff H.E. “Buddy” Glass.

Four candidates are in the running.

Shane Rathel is currently employed with the Miller County Sheriff's Office as Interim Sheriff.
Previously he served as Chief Deputy for four years.

“One day that was my goal, was to run for sheriff after the sheriff retired. Theres things I want to different. But I had worked for Sheriff Glass for 17 years and everything he done, you know I have a lot of the same ideas he did," Rathel said.

Mike Middleton works at Georgia Pacific in Cedar Springs.
He is a former Certified Police Officer.

"It's something I've always wanted to do. It's always been a desire of mine to be the sheriff of the county. I'll bring honesty and integrity to the department. I have a background in management for the last 17 years. I understand the budgets so that won't be a huge issue for me," Middleton said.

Scott Lawson is a Police Officer in Colquitt and has three years experience with the Georgia Department of Corrections.

"My family's been in law enforcement for over 16 years. I know the people of Colquitt pretty good. I want to have more security in the schools, make sure our schools are safe for the students and the teachers as well," Lawson said.

Candidate Rowell Joseph LeFrancois, is currently a Lieutenant for the Doughtery County Sheriff's Department.
He previously served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer.

"Experience, honesty, I’ve been two jobs basically in my whole life. Military, 20 years in the military and 19 years in the sheriff's department so I have 39 years of law enforcement experience," LeGrancois said.

All of the candidates say they'll be happy for whoever fills the position.
