Hurricane Preps

Wiregrass residents are no stranger to hurricane force winds, but even though the area has been affected by hurricanes before, each storm is different.

"We need to remind people that hurricanes are a threat for our region, we are on the gulf coast, we are susceptible to these things," says Meteorologist Jeff Evans.

And just because we haven't seen a hurricane in over a decade, doesn't mean we're in the clear.

"Even though it hasn't happened recently, it could be any year. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when," says Meteorologist Jeff Evans.

And when a hurricane hits, the Alabama emergency management agency says they're ready to take care of residents in the wiregrass.

"This certain region of the state is coming together as local officials, state responders, to make sure that they are as prepared as they can be, to handle the hurricane coming up here," says Art Faulkner.

Meteorologists’ say we can expect nine to fifteen named to storms to develop in the Atlantic basin, so the key word is preparation for you and your family.

One thing to always remember when protecting your home and family is to go tapeless when taping up your windows.

"We're trying to promote now, is the concept of going tapeless, it's much better if you are going to protect your home is to use boards, the taping is going to be ineffective of your time."

Time that can be valuable when a storm hits.

Connor Vernon talks about hurricanes bring much needed rains to our area. And they do. But hurricanes also bring much needed dollars to Alabama from people of Florida fleeing the storm. I remember one time a storm was headed for Pensacola and I10 was crowded with folks getting off on 231 headed to Dothan and beyond fleeing the storm, getting to higher ground.Storms bring a little to much rain to the local area when you live close to the beaches and low lying areas. If we got to have a storm, I hope every body lives through it and the storm does as little damage as possible.
