Driving under....the water?

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A Savannah man has been arrested and
charged with drunken driving after police say he drove a Chevrolet
Impala into Lake Mayer.

Chatham police spokesman Gene Harley said witnesses saw
22-year-old Christopher Byron Simmons steer the car off the road,
down a boat ramp and into the water around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Harley said firefighters and police helped Simmons to the shore
but he tried to fight his rescuers and told them a woman was in the
sinking car.

Officials did not find a second person in the car and called off
a search around 8 a.m.

Simmons was booked on misdemeanor charges of obstruction,
reckless driving, drunken driving, DUI less safe and failure to
maintain lane.

Harley said Simmons could possibly held financially responsible
for the search.
