For nearly a century and a half, white oak pastures has made a big impact in the community.
“This is the largest certified organic farm in Georgia.” White Oak Pastures Owner Will Harris said.
The farm is home to 5 red meat species, 5 poultry species, and 7000 laying hens
“There are several things that make white oak pastures different from other farms. Were the only farm int he us that has its own u-s-d-a inspected poultry plant and beef plant.” Harris said.
But most importantly, Harris uses his farm to teach.
“Consumer education with regards to nutrition, education, how food is produced is essential to our business.” Harris said.
Harris says he lets others know about the health benefits of eating organic meat and produce...and even let's them try some out.
“We have just opened a restaurant on the farm where we serve the public lunch five days a week and dinner on Friday and Saturday.” Harris said.
He knows his food does cost more money than food from commercial industries.
But he hopes to change their mind about spending a little more.
“No one is going to walk in and voluntarily pay more for eggs or vegetable than the main line unless they know the differences.” Harris said.
And with a new education program starting on the farm in a couple of months, Harris hopes his farm will shed new light on living and eating healthy.
Harris says they're going to start an agri-tourism business where people can stay on the farm, eat at the restaurant, and learn how to raise animals, eggs and veggies.
