Washington High Class of 1970 Reunion

High school class reunions are a fairly common occurrence.

But tonight's gathering in Early County was a little bit different, as the last graduating class from Washington High School came together to share memories and lay a foundation for future generations.

They sang, danced, and attempted to take pictures

But this reunion was about more than looking back, the class of 1970 decided to give back as well.

"We are presenting five scholarships this is our first year doing that because we want to reconnect with the community and make sure that other early county high school students have opportunities to succeed," said Mable Powell Holt, class of 1970.

The scholarship presentation is just one thing that brought over 50 alumni from Washington High School together.
Graduates were also able to see one of their most instrumental teachers.

"Dr. William Habour, he was our 8th grade teacher, he was a freedom rider and we were his first class after he graduated from Tennessee State we were his first class and we are so glad to have him here," said Holt.

"I am in education right now and i can see the difference in education now and back then they really carried for you as a person and although i work around a lot of good teachers it was more just coming to work and getting a paycheck they believed in you they believed in the whole person," said Class President Horace Williams.

"I think the most important things were our teachers we had the best teachers at Washington High School and that's what made this class a very successful class," said Holt.

Alumni say they are more than just successful.

"We are special because we not the last but the best we have a successful class couldn't no body come behind us that is why they closed the school down," said Holt.

The next Washington High reunion will be in 2015.
