ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- A University of Georgia professor has gotten
the highest honor given out by the Dominican Republic.
Howard J. Wiarda, a professor in international relations,
received the "Order de Colon" from President Leonel Fernandez for
his contributions to Dominican scholarship. Wiarda began his
academic career five decades ago in the Dominican Republic with
research on former dictator Rafael Trujillo.
Wiarda is considered one of the country's leading experts on
comparative politics. He has written seven books about the
Dominican Republic.Fernandez is one of Wiarda's former students.
