Troy Cuts Tuition for Dual Enrollment Students

TROY – Troy University officials have dramatically reduced tuition for high school students wishing to take college-credit courses through the ACCELERATE program.

ACCELERATE is the University’s online dual enrollment program offering high school sophomores, juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn both college and high school credit while still in high school. High school students who enroll in the program and continue through their senior year will graduate high school as college sophomores.

Historically, the tuition high school students pay has been the regular undergraduate online tuition. For the upcoming year, however, that tuition has been reduced by 50 percent, said Angela Sullivan, who coordinates the program. Term 1 begins Aug. 13, and the application deadline is August 3.

“Any course taken through ACCELERATE will represent substantial savings for the student and their family over the course of a college degree,” she said. “We hope the tuition decrease makes attaining a college education more reachable for more families.”

An off-shoot of TROY’s ACCESS program that provides online learning through Alabama’s public schools, ACCELERATE was originally developed as a way to reach students in private and home schools in Alabama. Because of the success the program’s enjoyed, ACCELERATE is available to any student. Since its inception in 2009 years ago, students from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Ohio, Texas, Tennessee and Virginia have participated.

“ACCELERATE attracts high-caliber students,” Sullivan said. “Students who are interested in jump-starting their college careers are generally those students who score better on standardized tests and make better grades in class. The average college GPA for these students is 3.34 and their average ACT score is 23.”

To qualify for admission, the students must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0, a 20 ACT score or 950 SAT, or have a recommendation letter from their high school counselor. They must also complete the ACCELERATE Approval Contract.
