Three Way Kidney Transplant

A Dothan woman waiting for a kidney got the answer to her prayers when strangers came together to help her out.

They were part of something called a three-way kidney transplant, a program that ends up helping not one person waiting for a donor, but three.

One of those women was Nikki Smith, and her story began in an unusual way.

After a dog bit her, the wound got infected and left her on dialysis for three years.

Smith's mom tried to help her daughter, but the two weren't a match. Her mom then volunteered to give her kidney to a complete stranger, Katie Harris.

That's where the program comes in.

Nikki's mom gave her kidney to Harris then her loved one gave their kidney and that person gave back to Smith.
