Riverfront Project Planned in Phenix City

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) -- A developer is planning a major riverfront project that will include upscale apartments, hotels and restaurants in Phenix City.

Mike Bowden says he hopes to make a significant impact with his development, which will be located at the Alabama-Georgia line on the Chattahoochee River.

Bowden's plans come after Phenix City officials recently offered tax incentives to the developer of a $220 million project that will include condominiums, hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues across the river from the civic center in neighboring Columbus, Ga.

City leaders plan to offer similar perks to Bowden. He already is designing a high-end apartment complex, but other parts will take years.

Developers hope to capitalize from the construction of a whitewater rafting course that will draw people to the area.
