NORTPORT, Ala. (AP) -- Police say a Tuscaloosa County man is dead after he and a neighbor exchanged gunshots across the fence separating their homes. Northport police say 71-year-old Roy Sewell was shot to death Friday while arguing with a neighbor about the location of a property line.
Toxic algae bloom studied in Indian River
INDIAN RIVER, Fla. (AP) -- A federal researcher has found three varieties of toxins from microscopic algae that he says are responsible for the deaths of 111 manatees, 51 dolphins and 300 pelicans in the Indian River Lagoon in the past year.
Florida Today reports that scientists said manatees have been eating more of the toxins, which stick to seaweed, because algae blooms have killed the seagrass they normally eat.
Peter Moeller, a research chemist at the National Ocean Service in Charleston, said he still doesn't know which algae are producing them, nor do they know how to eliminate it.
Earlier this week, Florida Senate President Don Gaetz announced that a select committee will study the potential environmental impact of discharges from Lake Okeechobee into Indian River Lagoon and other nearby bodies of water.
Amputee cyclist finishes ride, meets Baby Jameson
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- A Florida man has arrived to a hero's welcome, biking into Spokane, Wash., more than five weeks and 3,200 miles after he set off from Miami on a quest to help a 1-year-old boy born without hands or forearms.
Double arm amputee, tri-athlete and motivational speaker Hector Picard reached Spokane Saturday afternoon, completing the journey he began June 8 -- to bike across the country and raise money for Jameson Davis' prosthetic arms.
Picard tells KREM-TV he heard about Jameson six months ago and felt compelled to help. Picard lost his arms in a 1992 electrical accident.
Picard says his second goal was to prove "anything is possible."
Jameson's mother, Brooke, told KREM, "We can't even wrap our minds around what he's doing. It's incredible."
Mom arrested after cops say kid hurt in drug deal
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- A 27-year-old southwest Florida mother has been charged with child neglect after her 2-year-old daughter was injured during an alleged drug deal.
Clearwater police said Nicole Whitfield left her daughter in the car when she got out to buy or sell marijuana. The deal somehow went bad and that's when authorities say the little girl tried to get into the vehicle her mother was in and ended up being dragged a short distance when the vehicle started moving.
The child was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and released to relatives. The Department of Children and Families is also investigating.
Whitfield was taken to the Pinellas County Jail after Friday's arrest.
Fla. brothers turn 1957 airplane into restaurant
NEW SMYRNA, Fla. (AP) -- Two brothers are refurbishing a 1957 airplane and turning it into a restaurant in central Florida.
Danny and Skip Perna bought the DC-7 airplane from Opa-locka Airport in Miami after it was decommissioned from flight in 2005. The classic airliner was last used to fly cargo.
The brothers said the DC-7 Grille will seat nearly 50 customers plus a bar. The cockpit will remain intact and the wings are being painted silver in an attempt to match the aircraft's original metallic sheen.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports it will be several more months before the restaurant opens. The city must also sign off on the plans.
