JACKSON COUNTY, FL - Proposed changes in Washington are stirring up debate among truck drivers in our area.
The Surface Transportation Extension Act could bring changes for those in the trucking industry. If approved, the bill would require all truck drivers to install electronic on-board recorders. The recorders would replace the paper logs truckers are required to keep up with now.
"If they want me to do something more than I have time to available, sorry I can't do it. I don’t have the time to do it. I can no longer run illegal. We're a much safer industry than we ever have been,” truck driver Dan Smith said.
The Senate and House have sent their versions of the bill to a conference committee.
Florida Representative Steve Southerland serves on that committee. He said it will likely take months to make a decision.
