Peanut, Cotton Crops Looking Good

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama farmers are reporting healthy yields from their peanut and cotton crops this fall.

A break from the severe drought of a year ago and some late rains have helped many growers.

Wiregrass Research and Extension Center agronomist William Birdsong says he's seeing record peanut yields, with some farmers harvesting 4,000 to 5,000 pounds of peanuts per acre. He says that's compared to average yields of about 3,500 pounds per acre for Alabama.

Burke Thomas, who grows cotton in Slocomb, says rains from a couple of months ago have helped his cotton crop exceed last year's harvest, when drought hurt his overall yield.

Birdsong says Alabama might see a record year for cotton as well with average yields of up to 800 pounds.
