EVANS, Ga. (AP) -- Columbia County officials say residents will
still be able to look at maps showing which neighborhoods could
flood if the Thurmond Dam fails.

Emergency services director Pam Tucker tells The Augusta
Chronicle (http://bit.ly/uN6ehE ) that the maps will remain on the
county's website so people know how they will be affected in the
highly unlikely event of a dam failure.

Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers had asked that the maps be taken down, citing national security concerns, according to the newspaper.

Tucker says the existing maps will remain available until new
maps are issued in 2012.
