Officer Richard J. Haliford, of lithia springs, was 48 years old and had been with the Atlanta police department since 1986.
Officer Shawn a. Smiley, of lithonia, was 40 years old and had been with the department since 2010.
The helicopter in which Haliford and Smiley were riding crashed around 10:30 p.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive southwest and Hamilton E. Holmes drive northwest, not far from a drug store.
Police said Haliford and Smiley were up in the chopper searching for a missing 9-year-old boy, who was later found safe, at the time of the accident, and that the low-flying helicopter hit power lines in the area.
The national transportation safety board and the federal aviation administration are investigating the cause of the accident.
