TALLAPOOSA, Ga. (AP) -- Family and friends surprised a 92-year-old World War II veteran from Georgia on Memorial Day by honoring him and presenting him with the World War II Victory Medal.

The U.S. Navy said Earl T. Cauthen was presented with medals for his service during a Memorial Day weekend celebration on Saturday at the West Georgia Museum in Tallapoosa.

Cauthen, a Tallapoosa native, served three years in the U.S. Navy as a radioman aboard the U.S.S. Hilary P. Jones during World War II. The vessel provided perimeter security for the U.S.S. Missouri during the signing of the Japanese surrender of WWII at Tokyo Bay.
