ATLANTA (AP) -- More than 100 state and local officials are expected to visit thousands of pre-kindergarten classrooms as the Department of Early Care and Learning recognizes Sept. 30 - Oct. 4 as Georgia Pre-K Week.

Department spokesman Reg Griffin says Commissioner Bobby Cagle and First Lady Sandra Deal are scheduled to visit three child care programs in Alpharetta on Monday.

Griffin says they, and other state officials, will join in for educational activities, facility tours and one-on-one discussions with staff members.

Cagle says educating children from birth to age 5 is critical to their success in kindergarten and elementary school. Cagle says investing in pre-kindergarten education in Georgia is key toward children reaching their potential and the state's long-term economic growth.
